The quest for beautiful curls can sometimes seem like a challenge, but there are simple and effective techniques for enhancing your natural hair. Plopping is one such popular method that has captured the hearts of people with curly hair.
If you’d like to find out how this technique can help maximise your curls, this article is here to guide you.
1. What is plopping?:
The term ‘plopping’ comes from the word ‘plop‘, which means to lay down or put down gently. Plopping is a method of drying curly hair that aims to reduce frizz, maintain curl definition and speed up drying time. This technique involves wrapping your hair in a T-shirt or microfibre towel to create a ‘cap’ that absorbs excess moisture while allowing the curls to take shape.

2. How do I plop?:
Plopping is simple to do and only requires a few steps. Here’s how to do it:
Preparation: After washing your hair, apply your usual hair products, such as Hair bb cream, a leave-in styling product specially designed for curly hair.
Place the T-shirt: Lay out a soft cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel on a flat surface. Lean forward and place your hair in the centre of the T-shirt, so that your hair is at the nape of your neck and the ends are towards the top of your head.
Gently Wrap: Holding the corners of the T-shirt close to your temples, gently wrap the T-shirt around your hair to form a ‘hat’. Make sure your hair is well wrapped and that the t-shirt won’t move.
Secure: Once your hair is wrapped in the t-shirt, you can tie the sleeves or corners of the t-shirt to the back of your head to hold it in place.
Hold: Let your hair « plop » for about 20-30 minutes, or at least until the fabric has absorbed most of the moisture.
Release your curls: Gently untuck the shirt from your hair to release your delicately formed curls. You can then leave them to dry naturally or use a low-temperature diffuser to speed up the drying process.
3. The benefits of plopping:
Plopping offers several benefits for curly hair:
Less Frizz: By wrapping hair in a t-shirt, plopping helps reduce frizz by holding strands in place while drying.
Curl Definition: Plopping encourages the formation of well-defined curls by preserving the hair’s structure.
Faster drying: By absorbing moisture, plopping can reduce hair’s natural drying time.
Product preservation: The T-shirt absorbs excess product, preventing excessive build-up.
So plopping is a simple but powerful hair care technique that can really transform the look of your curly hair. By using this drying method, you can achieve well-defined curls, less frizz and a faster drying time.
Whether you have light curls or tight curls, plopping can help you reveal your hair’s natural beauty and take full advantage of its unique texture!
